Jackie Sawley & Erin Sawley – Aug 20, 2026 – High River, Alberta

The Sawleys described how a bovine-TB finding traced to Erin and Shane Sawley’s herd led to quarantine, extensive testing, and ultimately the depopulation of approximately 2,075 cattle, while Jackie’s nearby herd underwent trace-out testing and the destruction of reactors. They testified that producers bore major costs for labour, feed, testing logistics, cleaning, disinfecting, lobbying, and prolonged business disruption, while compensation was capped below market value and took until July 2026 to resolve. They also raised concerns about CFIA planning, communication, technical competence, plant-payment arrangements, the lack of financial responsibility borne by the regulator, and the limited effectiveness of cattle-industry organizations in advocating for affected producers.
