Paul Dirks – Oct 17, 2024 – Vancouver, British Columbia

Paul Dirks is a respected researcher who has spent years studying peer-reviewed literature on sexuality and gender identity. He has read over 700 studies on these topics, developing expertise that has led him to train professionals like teachers, lawyers, medical professionals, counselors, and pastors. Dirks has been followed on social media by leading sex researchers in the field. His knowledge and insights were valued enough that he was called to testify before the Canadian Senate regarding Bill C-16 on gender identity rights. He testifies about the research showing the fluidity of sexual orientation and gender identity in youth, as well as high rates of desistance from gender dysphoria after puberty. He argues that current affirmation-only approaches and medical interventions for youth are harmful and not evidence-based.

Summary

Paul Dirks testifies about research findings on sexual orientation and gender identity that he says conflict with current public messaging and policies. He presents evidence showing that sexual orientation and gender identity are fluid in youth, not fixed traits. Dirks cites studies finding that over 80% of same-sex attracted teens become exclusively heterosexual as young adults. For gender dysphoria, he notes research showing 85%+ of children desist after puberty if not socially transitioned.

Dirks argues that affirming and medically transitioning youth goes against this evidence that most will naturally resolve their gender dysphoria. He expresses concern about the rapid rise in youth identifying as LGBT and accessing gender treatments, especially among adolescent females. Dirks attributes this partly to social contagion and cultural promotion.

The testimony also covers research on elevated rates of childhood trauma in LGBT populations. Dirks argues this trauma may contribute to identity issues and should be explored in therapy, but new laws prevent this. He presents data suggesting poor long-term outcomes for those who undergo gender transition surgeries.

Dirks concludes by recommending stopping the promotion of LGBT identities to youth, repealing Canada’s conversion therapy ban (Bill C-4), ending school SOGI programs, and ceasing government funding to LGBT youth organizations. He argues current approaches are not evidence-based and may lead to lawsuits from detransitioners.
