VOICES ON THE RECORD
Maxime Bernier on Supply Management and Canada’s “Milk Cartels”
Former federal cabinet minister and People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier testified before the National Citizens Inquiry regarding Canada’s supply management system for dairy, poultry, and eggs.
Drawing on his experience in federal politics and agricultural policy, Bernier described the system as a “legal cartel” that controls production, fixes prices, restricts competition, and raises costs for Canadian consumers.
“Every cartel is bad, and that is why we have a law in Canada against cartels. The only one we can have in this country is the one approved by the government: the supply management cartel.”
Bernier also addressed the political influence of supply management, barriers facing new farmers, food affordability, and the dumping of milk under quota restrictions.
Topics discussed include: • dairy supply management • quotas and tariffs • food affordability • barriers for young farmers • milk dumping and production limits • trade negotiations with the United States
